One of our top priorities at CrossOver is for each child to complete their daily homework assignments. If they do not have an assignment, then they are able to spend that time reading. Each group of children dedicates 30 minutes to their homework and/or reading each day of the week. The older CrossOver kids (4th & 5th graders) play an important role in the Kindergarten and First Grader students’ homework time. These two groups are paired up and become “Homework Buddies”. The 4th & 5th grade group will help the younger children with their spelling words, math facts, reading, etc. The older group will also plan an art activity in case their “buddy” does not have a homework assignment.
CrossOver is also a time for caring. We have started working on service projects this year. Our first one is to send encouraging notes to the families receiving food through the Deer Park Community Food Pantry. Each month CrossOver kids will write notes for the families receiving food from the food bank. These notes will be placed in the bags of food that the families receive.
CrossOver also held their first food drive. To help supplement the items brought in Ms. Ashley’s class sold cupcakes. The Cupcakes for Canned Goods was a huge success! The kids spent the week preparing for the sale. They sold almost 200 cupcakes raising $100. These funds will be used to purchase items needed by the Deer Park Community Food Pantry. Through projects like this CrossOver kids learn to care for others. Please join us in bringing canned goods to the Deer Park Community Food Pantry.
